Elise Weegels has designed a communal composting bin for apartment buildings. Currently, separating waste is not an option for apartment-dwellers in the Netherlands. ‘Buurtcompost’ lets residents and municipal services collaborate to recycle organic material, and keeps the entire cycle in the neighbourhood. The container offers space for all household organic waste, as well as brown material collected locally by the parks department. Because the bin is suspended, it swings whenever it is filled, mixing and aerating the components. The compost can be used by all to enrich the soil in green spaces, vegetable patches and plant pots.
